CHECKING OUT! travel, trips and tips

VIETNAM

HANOI:
Get There: Dragon Air. 1 hour 50 minutes from Hong Kong
Currency: Dong (VND) and USD are accepted here. Have both on hand.
$1 USD = 20,940.00 VND
Sleep: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. The French colonial-style hotel offers impeccable service and beautiful surroundings. Great location, too.
Do Something: If you do nothing else, book a tour with Tu at Hanoi Street Food Tours. You’ll eat your way through Hanoi and taste some of the best local grub, all while seeing different parts of the city and learning about local culture. By far my favorite part of the trip.
Eat: Had your fill of noodles? Check out The Green Tangerine for beautiful French fusion. Try the duck.
Drink: Bottoms up at the bar with the best slogan: Half Man/Half Noodle says Drink Here...Or We Shoot The Puppy. Save Fido, drink fast!
Shop: Local quilts, fabrics and bags for dirt cheap along Hang Bo streets.
Words of wisdom: Tu gave us sage advice that may have saved our lives, literally. When crossing the street, do not run (although that may go against your instincts). Walk slowly, look the drivers in the eye, and keep crossing. They will go around you if you make eye contact and stay slow. Keep calm and carry on.

MALAYSIA:

BORNEO, KOTA KINABALU:
Get There: AirAsia or Dragon Air, 3 hours from Hong Kong to Kota Kinabalu
Currency: Malaysian Ringgit
$1USD = 3.19 Malaysian Ringgit
Sleep: Venture to Gaya Island, just a quick boat ride from KK. You'll get out of the city, which isnt't really worth your time. Spend your days at the beach snorkeling or in the rainforest with the monkeys.
Do Something: There are a lot of adventure activities in Malaysia. Spend two days climbing Mount Kinabalu, one of the coolest things I've done. Or, spend a day white water rafting, about two hours from KK. Book your adventures through TYK Adventures who will book your day trips, your guides and even your hotels.
